Starting in a new shard can be overwhelming. Make sure you read all other web pages here from start to finish. They will answer most of your questions.
If you cannot find information about something, chances are it is in the
webpage. You can search in there for what you need.
If you want to buy starting items offered at the vendor stones, make sure you search in this page
, then visit the right vendor stone using the public gate.
Recall that if you have an Enchanted Bag of Holding in your pack, the item you purchase will go in there automatically.
If you want to buy starting items from player vendors, single click yourself and select vendor search!
Of course, feel free to join us on discord and ask your questions. The discord channel can also be searched, but the news webpage is a chronicle of all changes we've made since the beginning, so it is your friend!
Depending on the class you like to play, warrior, mage, crafter etc, you can set basic goals you need to accomplish, while learning the novel systems we have created in Quests and Legends.
Certain items are given to you when you create your avatar, so make sure you take full advantage.
For example, the blue gate can set certain skills to GM for you depending on your playing style (basic professions).
Then you can use your setup to join an automated guild, if you satisfy the requirements, and take advantage of what they have to offer.
Recall that veteran rewards are awarded way faster in our shard (10 days).
Make sure you choose the item that better suits your needs at the stage your avatar is.
Different players progress in their journeys at different speeds, so find the pace you enjoy playing and stick with it.
There is so much content in our shard that will keep you occupied for years.
So take your time to read the website pages, and learn of all the things that are available here to help you succeed and have fun! Afterall, this is a video game...
Starting your Journey
Depending on the type of avatar you wish to be, you have different options when you start your journey.
Since we have no skill cap here, you can do it all, but lets see if we can organize a little bit a general approach to the game.
Once you've chosen your first 10 skills to GM at the blue gate, you can hit the training grounds and train other skills you'll be using, immediately.
Note that training books at TR2 and TR3 have caps. So to train to 120 or even to 150 later on, you'll need the Advanced Tomes of Knowledge (expensive).
If you experience any problems (messages saying you're already training or it is busy), single click a tome and reset it. Remember you cannot have two players training at the same tome.
If you join certain automated guilds, these advanced tomes can be used for free and you can train all skills in a couple of days.
For what follows, I will be assuming that you have had a basic reading (even superficial) of the other webpages in our site.
Getting Starting Items:
Apart from the vendor stones, joining a guild can help you get some good gear.
Do not hesitate to ask for items if you need a leg up. Our veteran players are there to help, guildies or not.
Ultimately, the more time and thought you put in your build the easier it will be to get the right items for it.
Strategic planning can save you a lot of time, since you'll know what items to try to find, either buy or get for free from our helpful community.
There are those who don't need help of any kind, and that is admirable.
I would suggest that you get the basic free gear from the vendor stones, hit the easy dungeons and start grinding!
The good, the bad and the ugly:
The good thing is that you are limited only by your imagination. You can play whatever type of avatar you want and any way you want it. You are given everything you need to succeed as a pure crafter, magus, warrior, archer, tamer, sampire and any other type of character you can come up with. To get there you need to use everything we have here at your disposal.
If I were to say something is bad is the potential for lag (usually by some player's macros) and the constant attacks we've gone through. Do not let it bother you. We've mitigated most of these after years of trial and error. All our rules reflect our attempts to reduce lag and keep a safe and healthy place for all to enjoy.
It does get ugly sometimes when we have to constantly remind players to put delays between instructions in their macros. I want players to have as much freedom as possible, although sometimes this is abused, and then things get ugly. Warnings are always given, but if players ignore GMs we have to take action and eject the person breaking the rules. I am always honest with you, I just ask that you show us the same courtesy.
For a fistful of dollars - Making coin:
There are so many ways of making good coin in our shard, it will make your head spin.
Learn about the adventurer's log and custom quests, as well as counting stones. Massive coin to be had when you start, as well as materials, quest tokens and other items you'll need later.
Do all the starter quests; in particular, get the Gold pouch from the easy dungeon to hold all currencies.
Hit the newbie champ, you got 3 weeks. Easy coin there.
If the newbie champ is hard, spent a night or two in TR1 in one of the rooms there, earning both skill and coin.
Attend every shard event; even if you come in last you'll get rewards.
If you're a necromage, the easiest route to killing almost everything at champs is wither. Stay in wraith form for the infinite mana or if you can handle it, lich form with mana regen.
Warriors and Archers should use as many area of effect damage abilities as they can, like whirlwind.
Starting magi can summon vortex and use chain lightning or earthquake until they get elemental spells.
Do all the easy quests from the quest hall, get some good coin and better starting items. Move into medium and difficult quests when you feel ready.
Crafters can do the crafter challenge and gold panning to get going.
Get both your evo insectoids to stage 10 asap and have them harvest all day. Then either sell the harvest or hand it in the counting stones (at least 501 items to guarantee a protection token), for great rewards.
Make sure you receive every gift event handed out.
Important Commands:
Certain commands are a must to learn asap, including [selfres, [sellinbulk, [buyinbulk, [mypets,
[grab and [grab -t (for the free loot bag at TR1), and [mk to open your master key.
There are over 1600 items contained in the key, which you can collect from your backpack using command [collectitems.
Other important commands involve different systems we have available in our shard. Make sure you see the
webpage.
Combat:
Do not get frustrated when you get your posterior handed to you. Even our elite veterans can die, especially at high level challenge rifts.
Which ever path you choose, that of the noble paladin or that of the samurai make sure you train the appropriate skills before going hunting. Costs you nothing and can be done overnight if needs be.
Do not underestimate the Consecrate Weapon Chivalry spell. Also the ignore armour ability can save you a lot of trouble. Both of these can bypass high resistances or immunities of certain creatures.
When you're training, just use a robe or your items will break. You can also use the free weapons and shield in the training room, so you dont have to worry if they break.
Certain high level critters can and will one-shot you. There are ways to mitigate, like the dodge skill, common in many professions.
But when you first start out, don't feel you need to do everything right away. Our best players have been with us for years, it doesn't happen overnight.
The basic spells from many easy to obtain/buy spellbooks can be vital to your survival. Make sure you check out everything offered by the vendor stones.
A potion can save your life when you start (and I don't mean Ambrosia, you can craft that later). Basic potions are a warrior's great resource before they get better gear.
When you start, you'll have only a few basic items and skills at your disposal. As a melee dealer or archer make sure you get as much area of effect in your weapons as possible. Most of this comes with crafting and applying deeds.
Archers should definately get the infinite quiver (100% ammo reduction) using event tokens. A Christmas gift hat can also be used for 100% ammo reduction, which will free your back to use a cloak.
Magi are the best class in the game, they don't need any help! (ok my personal bias showing here)
We have so many custom spells here, including elemental spells that can be devastating to the hardest foes!
But when you start you might take up spellweaving. I like summoning my imps (with spellweaving mastery).
They are what I call cast and forget, they'll get the business done, while you're butchering your enemies from a safe distance.
Later in your avatar progression as a mage you can replace them with ice, fire, poison, ether or earth imps and other elemental summons and spells for massive damage output.
The Crafter:
Crafting items is what UO is all about. Train your crafting skills as soon as you are able, you'll need them all, cooking especially.
You heard right cooking... Combined with enhanced tomes of crafting you can build and sell some fantastic merchandise.
Starting out hit the bods. These require patience and they are not for everybody, but dedicated crafters.
Try to harvest in the Elysian Islands for a 5x output in resources.
Make sure you finish all crafting challenges regularly, for great rewards!
Once your mining is high enough, you'll start getting our custom ores. Use those to create items with unique properties.
A pure crafter doesn't need to hunt; you can hire one of our many adventurer players to get you the important ingredients you need for your recipes.
For example, our custom crafter champ spawn Vulkan can be tough to beat at first, but he can drop a massive number of materials and recipes.
Also study our page.
Improving Equipment:
Once you're ready, you'll be able to create some really Godly items for your avatar.
But before we get there, let's start with the basics.
First you max all your crafting skills and magical skills.
You can either buy or hunt on your own basic materials required for imbuing, or gems for spellcrafting.
Next you build or purchase every type of skill suit you can imagine, so you can use the enhanced tomes of crafting.
Always keep spellcrafting gems and protection tokens in your backpack.
Improving an item depends on what type of item it is and what properties it already has.
There are caps to the number of properties you can add to an item, for all crafting systems. Crafting professions can go over that cap!
Imbuing has a lot of restrictions on the item it can be applied, so it is best that you start with an item you craft yourself. You can add up to 15 props if you got the skill and materials.
Certain deeds can break an item with no save (fixed chance 1%). Use those first before adding anything else to minimize frustration...
With spellcrafting you can add up to 10 properties to an item. A property can be applied and rerolled on any item.
Use the appropriate enhanced tome to add more properties to the item, e.g., for a shield use blacksmithy tome, for spellbook the inscription tome, for bows the fletching tome etc.
Only at the end, and once all properties have reached their caps via other crafting system, you start adding deeds to the item.
Luck plays a massive role in many aspects of your avatar activities, so make sure all items have 3k luck. You can get past this cap with the Midas deed which is capped at 5k.
Evos and Evo Training:
It is very easy to get an evo nowadays. Our veterans have managed to obtain and breed them so they go up for sale all the time on discord, or simply ask and you will get one.
Only buy eggs, puppies or elementalist deeds, not a shrunk evo. They do not hold the evo; it was a scam and those aren't allowed for sale on player vendors.
Evos are regularly handed out as gifts, during our gift events.
Do not leave your evo training on its own. In general, it will follow you if you leave, but if it doesn't you might end up losing it, and it will not be replaced.
It cannot be overestimated how important evo insectoids are for your avatar development.
They can harvest for you all sorts of items once they hit stage 10, including important deeds to improve your items.
When fishing, the chest is decaying for easier cleanup. Just use [collectitems regularly to get the good stuff in your master key and the rest is discarded.
Using their second accounts, most of our veterans have them harvesting nonstop.
Evos do not get exactly the same items as the avatar, e.g., no mooncoins while fishing, but everything else is pretty much fair game.
It is best to harvest in the Elysian Islands facet. The player gets 5x the resources, and the evo 50% more resources.
Exploring Shard Systems:
Very early on you should study items like the adventurer's log, which are given to you from the beginning.
Crafting an easy procurement quest, not only will reward you with LUPs for your avatar, but also great items, with no need to fight at all.
Simply harvesting logs, ore and fish can accomplish this if you don't want to fight (crafter) or you think you're not ready.
The counting stones is another must to consider in your repertoire. Even without evo insectoids (which can gather massive amounts of items) handing in certain items can yield great rewards, in particular quest tokens.
Quest tokens can be used to purchase the enhanced tomes of crafting, that can be used to impove gear and craft amazing items once you're ready.
Do not underestimate joining any event either. Even with 0 skill and getting last place in certain events, you can still get event tokens and other rewards to get you going.
Midlevel Activities
Midlevel activities refer to the era in your avatar's progression were you have already mastered all basic quests, standard champion spawns and are becoming more familiar with the unique systems of QaL.
A midlevel avatar should be able to handle all peerless dungeons and all of our standard champion spawns and unique dungeons
, except for the custom Ares spawn and perhaps the new Hel Dungeon and quest (Elemental Plane, copy of Doom from Malas).
At this level, an avatar has maxed all their skills (120) and started using our unique quest maker (Adventurer's Log
).
A very important quest involves the spell maker, which allows you to create your own spells with properties that fit your unique playing style! Head to Training Area 3 (third floor) and speak to the npc to get started.
At this stage, you should have become familiar with all our crafting systems and have began to improve all your gear
().
This will allow you to handle any midlevel challenge and help you towards mastering your playing style.
At midlevel, you should start becoming familiar with our Challenge Rift system. At low rift levels
you should be able to survive, even if you don't manage to complete the rift at first. Rifting requires constant movement and serious planning. Make sure
you study all info provided
.
